One Thing After Another

By William L. Garvin

Back in 2006, the Department of Justice sued Donald Sterling for discrimination against Blacks and Hispanics in renting apartments he owned.  Sterling subsequently paid $2.73 million in fines and nearly another $5 million in court sanctioned attorney fees and costs.  Inexplicably, the local NAACP awarded him the President’s Award in 2008 and a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009.  The latter was after Elgin Baylor had sued Sperling for wrongful termination as the Clipper coach for racial discrimination.  Apparently, they will no longer bestow the second Lifetime Achievement Award on him next month.  Will they be giving the money Sperling donated back?

Another thing that caught my eye was the “Great American Smoke-out” has now become the “Great American Smoke-in.”  Thousands of people chose Easter Sunday to get stoned by smoking marijuana in public places.  Even in Colorado, smoking dope in public is against the law.  However, law enforcement did nothing about their open defiance.  Later on, however, they did manage to arrest a ten-year old boy for selling marijuana on the school grounds.

So if it’s clear that smoking grass is no big deal what about grazing on grass?  The Bureau of Land Management estimates it would spend $3 million to round up cattle to pay for the $1.1 million in fees and penalties that Cliven Bundy owes in Nevada.  It’s clear that the law is on the side of the federal government but rather than simply putting a lien on his property, the BLM showed up in force with hundreds of agents, SWAT teams armed with assault rifles, and police dogs lunging at and menacing protestors.  Waco and Ruby Ridge images surged to the surface in many minds.  The initial government pretext of BLM protecting the desert tortoise went up in smoke faster than a doobie at 4:20 on 4/20!  Maybe if this army of BLM agents was reassigned to Arizona, they could take back all the parks and public lands that have been surrendered to the Mexican drug traffickers!

Meanwhile, faster than a speeding bullet, Harry Reid dashed to the Senate floor to declare Bundy and his Nevada supporters as “domestic terrorists.”  Of course Harry the Hypocrite failed to condemn the burning, looting, rapes, assaults against peace officers, and general hooliganism of the Occupy Wall Street movement which illegally occupied state and federal properties across the country.

It’s nothing new for Harry, just more of the same.  Remember he lied about Romney not paying taxes and personally attacks the Koch brothers every chance he gets.  Now of course, billionaire Tom Steyer has pledged $100 million for liberal environmental causes and Harry has rolled out the red carpet and burned the midnight Senate oil in honor of his hedge fund buddy.  Steyer opposes fossil fuels but made a fortune investing in them. His hedge fund, Farallon Capital, has extensive holdings in fossil fuel companies like Kinder Morgan which is building a pipeline money maker while Keystone is blocked.  Meanwhile the president sells out the unions to the environmentalists and bitches about “fat cats” as he sits down to his $35,000 per plate fund raisers.  Currently, Harry is mute about Steyer’s hundred million and Bloomberg’s fifty million dollar efforts “to buy America.”

Another unsettling episode was Nancy Pelosi saying there’s simply nowhere to cut in the federal budget.  Maybe if the State Department wasn’t spending $400,000 on a statue of a camel for an embassy in Pakistan ….  Maybe if they could find the $6 billion that Hillary’s department couldn’t account for….  Maybe if the Pentagon wasn’t about to destroy $1.2 billion worth of ammunition….  Maybe if the feds hadn’t spent $300 million on the Oregon healthcare website that went belly up….Maybe if the IRS wasn’t handing out $3 million in bonuses to 2,800 employees who had been disciplined for misconduct, including $1 million to 1,100 workers who did not pay their taxes!

If government was competent in handling programs of this magnitude, then forty veterans wouldn’t have died waiting for appointments in the Phoenix Veterans Administration Health Care system.  Sharon Hellman would have been fired for “cooking the books” regarding veteran suicides while she was in charge in Spokane.   Instead, she was reassigned to Phoenix where again she kept two sets of books to cover up waiting times for appointments for veterans for UP TO A YEAR!  For forty of America’s finest, she really was a “death panel.”

Leftist Foam, Froth and Fury

By William L. Garvin

“I don’t give them Hell; I just tell the truth about them and they think it’s Hell.”

Harry S. Truman

There is so much inconsistency, intolerance, outrage and hypocrisy in the leftist world this week that it’s a wonder they can even walk with their panties bunched up that tightly!  Their latest undie-twister came when the Supreme Court ruled in McCutcheon v. FEC that donors have the right to give campaign contributions to as many candidates as they want.  The ceiling on contributions to individuals or party committees remains the same but the aggregate has been eliminated.  It’s “another step on the road to ruination,” caterwauled Chuck Schumer, the Democrat senator from New York.  He did not elaborate on the $11million he has sitting in his campaign kitty.

“All it does is take away people’s rights because, as you know, the Koch brothers are trying to buy America,” whined Harry Reid, the Democrat Senate Majority Leader.  Well, Harry, at least they’re not out buying thousands of dollars of jewelry “trinkets” for their granddaughter out of campaign funds!  Of course, all Harry will have to do is reimburse his campaign versus Dinesh D’Souza, who has been indicted by a federal grand jury for illegal campaign contributions of about the same amount.  Of course, the fact that D’Souza makes movies critical of the president has nothing to do with it…it’s coincidence not causation.  Of course it is.

And here you go again with your obsession for painting the Koch brothers and conservatives as some sort of evil James Bond-type villains.  You might want to visit www.opensecrets.org website for some actual facts about contributions.  There are 22 groups listed that contributed more to the Democrat party than Koch Industries contributed to the Republican party.  By way of comparison, the top ten donors to the DNC coughed up $485,652,385.00 while the top ten donors to the RNC topped out at $271,108,726.00.  Nine of the top ten DNC donors are unions so who do you think will be most successful in “buying America”?  If money in politics is evil, does that make unions more evil than the Koch brothers?

Speaking of evil, California has three state senators under indictment for corruption, Leland Yee, Ron Calderon, and Rod Wright, all democrats.  Wright has already been convicted but not sentenced and the anti-Second Amendment zealot Yee has ironically been charged with gun trafficking by the FBI.  None of the three had the moral compunction to resign so the Senate finally got around to suspending them.  Of course, they were suspended WITH PAY so just as with Lois Lerner, they get free vacations at taxpayers’ expense for violating their oaths of office and public trust.

In other example of twisting in the wind, leftist hypocrisy, the screening of the film HONOR DIARIES has been shut down by the University of Michigan Dearborn.  This film is the story of nine Islamic women who been subjected to horrific abuse and misogynistic treatment living in an “honor culture.”  Apparently, the Council on Arab-Islamic Relations (CAIR) perceives the honor killings, honor beatings, child marriages, and genital mutilations as “islamophobic” and also was incensed because it was “produced by a Jew.”  So much for diversity of thought on campus.  Meanwhile, prominently displayed on this same campus is a poster that proclaims “ABORTION IS A GIFT FROM GOD.”  That is wrong on so many levels but for some reason, the American Atheists and the Freedom From Religion Foundation have yet to weigh in on this one.  The double standard for “sensitivity” and “diversity” leaves a putrid stench.

A final example of leftist intolerance was the malevolent attack against Brendan Eich who committed the unpardonable sin of believing marriage should be between one man and one woman.  He confirmed his permanent place in liberal hell by donating $1,000 to the support of Proposition 8 in 2008.  Eich, the inventor of JavaScript and recently promoted CEO of Mozilla, was forced to resign because of his targeting by the “gay Gestapo,” a term coined by Tammy Bruce.  Andrew Sullivan, also gay and a supporter of same sex marriage said: “It’s staggering to me that a minority long persecuted for holding unpopular views can now turn around and persecute others for the exact same reason. If we cannot live and work alongside people with whom we deeply disagree, we are finished as a liberal society.”  That’s it in a totalitarian nutshell.  You are only free to think, speak, and act like me.

It is also important to note that, much like the Chic-fil-A uproar, there was not a scintilla of evidence that Eich had ever discriminated against anyone in any situation.  It is probably safe to conjecture that most of his liberal persecutors contributed to and supported either Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton in 2008.  At that time, both of them held the position that marriage should be between one man and one woman.  Where’s your capricious outrage now?!

LETTER TO THE EDITOR, 4/4/2014

Dear Editor,

Drama triangles are always so fascinating when "Persecutors, Rescuers, and Victims" abruptly switch positions and adopt their new roles. In a single tag team edition, my principles and facts are dismissed as "fulminations," I've been linked to Nazi Germany, threatened with a lawsuit, and again had my written positions completely distorted and falsified. Yet I am the one who "crosses the line." While one letter promises to focus on facts, it contains the usual ad hominem attacks against the Koch brothers, Fox News, and yours truly.

I find it curious that I am the one being equated to Joseph Goebbels, Hitler's Minister of Propaganda in Nazi Germany and his "big lie" strategy. It wasn't me who continually repeated that "if you like your insurance plan you can keep your insurance plan; if you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor; the average family will save up to $2,500 per year" etc., etc., etc. In Germany, the big lie was essential to government maintaining control over every facet of German life. That is the antithesis of what I stand for. I am totally opposed to the burgeoning leviathan of government of which the latest manifestation is Obamacare and the $17.5 trillion dollars of national debt that Big Government is responsible for!

Remember that the Affordable (sic) Care Act came into being by Democrats in a midnight blitzkrieg via a dictatorial process that directly contradicted President Obama's promises. Now we find the federal government forcefully goose stepping its way into the intimate relationships between doctor and patients while simultaneously creating chaos in the insurance industry. President Obama and the majority of Democrat principals have been very clear that they want single payer, that is government run, that is socialized medicine. Dr. Ezekiel Emmanuel has gleefully predicted the death of the health insurance industry and as a primary architect of Obamacare, he has been able to facilitate his self-fulfilling prophecy.

As for the threat of a lawsuit for defamation and libel, you can't be serious. It's analogous to the kid who murders his parents and then pleads for mercy because he's an orphan! Truth is always a defense and I firmly stand by my facts and my writings. Apparently liberals think they can say anything they want, any time they want, and in any way they want but conservatives are to accept their slings and arrows, meekly turn the other cheek, accept their fate as a punching bag and then slink off gently into the night. I don't accept those rules of engagement and will not be bullied into compliance.

This is particularly true when foolish things such as "Mr. Garvin seems to be wholeheartedly against everyone being able to afford health care coverage" is written and printed. That sort of "big lie" will never stand unchallenged! Of what possible benefit would anyone's lack of insurance be to me? It's an absurd argument and about as sound as saying that I'm for dirty air, dirty water, hate women and want to push grandma off the cliff! As to those who have been forced by governmental mandate to sign up for Obamacare, how many were previously uninsured? Don't ask--can't tell. How many who signed up did so because their previous policies were canceled? Don't ask--can't tell. How many of those who signed up have actually paid a premium? Don't ask--can't tell. How many of those who signed up are the "young invincibles'? Don't ask--can't tell. Why does the Congressional Budget Office say that after all is said and done, there will still be 30 million uninsured? Don't ask--can't tell. When will the President start enforcing the law and stop treating people unequally by his continual issue of waivers, exemptions, and delays? Don't ask--can't tell.

Until those and many other questions are answered, I will make full use of my God-given and unalienable rights in whatever manner I think appropriate.   While I can't leap tall buildings with a single bound and I'm certainly not faster than a speeding bullet, I will continue my verbal defense of "truth, justice, and the American way" on whatever topic and in whatever venue I deem appropriate.  And as far as a lawsuit, my maxim has always been that if you think you have the ammunition, then fire your weapon. I'm not that easily intimidated.  And you can take that to the bank!

Sincerely,
Bill Garvin
